My plans are to add gettext support as a Container/driver.
AFAIK, gettext is one of the best options out there, but
it's not available on every platform or its support is not included
by default, so PEAR::Translation aims to offer some valid
alternative storage containers, both file- and db-based,
with an unified API and a simple interface.
