PEAR and shared hosts

What about "installing" PEAR on a shared host, if you are not the sysadmin, and he/she doesn't seem to install it for you?
I always copy the needed files manually into my app's docroot (PEAR.php, DB.php, DB/DataObject.php etc), so no PEAR installation is required. This works for also for shared hosts if you only have an account for your webspace. What's your opinion about this? Is this possibility documented anywhere?
