Without diving deeper into your code cause it is really late where I am atm:
We already have an XPath package in PEAR. However its not very well
maintained. Actually its known to be buggy. Some of the bugs are actually
fixed in CVS, but nobody made a release.
It would be great if you could take a look at the package and maybe get it
fixed up and merge in whatever you had that is missing from the package.
