3. Adjust your include_path directive.
ini_set("include_path", ini_get("include_path") . ":/var/www/www.example.com/includes/");
shouldn't this be
ini_set("include_path", "/var/www/www.example.com/includes/:" . ini_get("include_path"));
?
If you wish to download and manually install (copy) some packages to your /includes/ directory, it's a good idea to have your includes/ directory first in the include_path order. Otherwise, they may be ignored if another version is installed on the server somewhere in the include_path. If you reverse the path order the way I did above, this may save you some hours/minutes of headache.. In my opinion _this_ order should be provided as an example in the manual.
