I sent this to the list time ago, perhaps helps you:
"If you want to try the pear install script from CVS you have to do:
update your local files:
# cvs update php4/pear
# cd php4/pear/scripts
# cp pear.in /usr/bin/pear
// Now edit the first line of /usr/bin/pear and replace:
#!@prefix@/bin/php -Cq
with
#!/usr/bin/php -Cq (or the path to your php executable)
# chmod +x /usr/bin/pear
Now you should be able to invoke it with "pear" at the command line."
