::shrug:: If you define it as a link field in your links.ini it should be treated as a link, whatever it is. Sure, it makes little sense to use a datetime or timestamp field, but if someone configs it that way....
I would suggest rather to simply check the types of the two and produce an error (which would be suppressed with an option) if they're not the same.
