It is actually very, very, very bad, because it will lead people into
deceptive security: Implementations of datatypes need to be fast per
definition, because they are probably one of the most basic things in
a programming language. Thus it is common sense to implement new
types at the lowest level that is possible (without diving into
assembler progamming). In case of PHP, the lowest level is a C
extension.
Compared to low level implementations, userland implementations will
be terribly slow.
And that's, where "deceptive security" joins the game: Having slow
implementations of advanced datatypes in PEAR will cause people to
start using the types more or less heavily, because they think that
the stuff can't be bad if it comes from PEAR. But in fact, the stuff
is bad. Even bader than Usama and Sideshow Bob together.
