I hear you. I don't do this in general, as you've realized. My rationale
was getting mysqli working is a major thing, particularly in a package
that is so widely used as a dependency, and pepole should know about it.
Also, we had discussion here about the tests not working on the installed
version as well as some tests reporting failures under PHP 5 due to case
sensitivity. Now everything works.
Your changelog note to a MDB commit mentioned several tests not working
even in DB. When you get a chance, do a fresh install and see what
happens. All the tests work now. If you'd like to examine a DBMS that
passes all tests, use PostgreSQL. MySQL "fails" 10errormap.phpt.
