I don't know of any document that explicitly handles PHP's exceptions,
but http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?ExceptionPatterns
is probably a good starting
point. And Joel Spolsky has some thoughts on the topic, too:

To some extent I have the feeling that relying on exceptions will
overtax a lot of PEAR developers: Even if one is a talented programmer,
it is very likely that it takes years to get a good feeling about when
it is appropriate to use exceptions and when not. Thus I'm not sure
if PEAR (and its users) will benefit much from an extensive exception
usage.
