check for installed package

hi all!
what's the fastest/best way of determining wether a pear package is installed or not? i want to check wether a given package is installed for optional stuff in my app.
should i:
- require() the package and see if it throws an error?
- ask the pear-registry?
- do a file_exist()?
can someone help me with this?
