I'm currently basing the design on libenchant's interface. For convenience, it'll have a pspell (actually aspell) backend as a default, which can be switched for enchant, if it's available.
Sounds like a very useful package. I'd suggest using a driver model so that people can use whatever spellcheck backend they like. This could be especially beneficial for other languages. The default backend could be autoselect, as you have described. Klaus
Enchant itself is just a spellchecking interface that supports multiple backends (aspell, myspell, uspell, ispell), so that's already in there. If, for some reason, there's a need for more backends on the PHP side, it should be trivial to add drivers anyway. I'm currently using factory methods, much like DB, MDB(2), XSLT, etc. to make driver selection easy. Nikolas 'Atrus' Coukouma
