Hi Greg,
I've seen that Horde is doing the stuff quite the same as you require.
All external require/include are relative.
All private internal are included or required as an absolute path.
Just this absolute path is set as a SYMBOL by the basic class,
which symbol being used by all subsequent scripts to get the privates.
I think it's a little bit more flexible this way:
the included script is not due to be in a subdirectory but e.g. in some parallel branch.
It could be a good way to keep different version of the same package.
