furthermore,
if you don't have that last linefeed, (some) programs [ie., in a shell/console] will display
your prompt on the last line of the file, and not on a new line.
Example:
$ cat foo
this is a line of text. The file ends here. %User@HostName>
Colin Ross
Web Assistant
World Study Group
2226 Bush Street
San Francisco, CA 94115
www.worldstudygroup.com
cross@worldstudygroup.com

Unix formatted files contain a \n after the last character in a file.
That \n does not get translated into output by PHP.
