maintaining session across soap calls

i am using php5 with pear soap. can anyone tell me how to ensure that the
session is preserved across the SOAP calls. i've tried appending the
sessionid to the ?wsdl url call with no luck. Assume i should somehow
attach cookies, but can't see how to do that. any help much appreciated.
