If anyone else reads this, the following might help:
I simply did a
$rs = $db->query("select * from table limit 1");
$tableInfo = $db->tableInfo($rs);
I passed $rs to DB::tableInfo() instead of the table name (string)
This appears to be a suitable workaround. Works fine for me.
