I don't feel pear-dev is the place for such a discussion. Here are some
reasons:
* pear-dev is about how the PEAR team develops packages, not how end users
deploy them.
* These issues have been discussed many times all over the internet. Do
some searching in www.google.com and groups.google.com.
* Take a look at the Open Source Initiative's website:
http://www.opensource.org/
* Of course you have to respect the licenses the PEAR packages have.
