I'm actually using such a mechanism (for another purpose) and planned to
implement it in a generic class. But the problem is the representation.
We can have an Abstract Data Type satisfying everyone, but the
implementation will force the choice of the representation, and
everybody won't be satisfied with (for example) "first sibling, next
brother" [1] tree structure, as there are many others, each with its own
pros and cons.
But maybe I should pick up a representation and submit the class, and
we'll discuss of its qualities.

[1] sorry it may not be the true name (I'm french) but you understand
what it means, don't you ?
