Hi all, I've been spending quite a bit of time re-working some of the features of PEAR 1.4, and the next release 1.4.0a10 will contain some significant upgrades. First off, I've reworked channels slightly. Now, it's no longer necessary to type in the channel name as in $ pear install channel/package the installer will simply search through all channels, after retrieving a master list from pear.php.net. In my tests, this only adds a few seconds to searching for a lot of convenience if you have broadband. In addition, instead of complaining if dependencies are not valid, PEAR will simply correct the problems. If you're running PHP 4.3.0, and a package requires PHP 5.0.0, it will properly download a tarball from snaps.php.net, and get things running in no time, then install the package. The coolest part is this also solves the problem of installing PECL extensions on Windows without need of binary PECL packages! PEAR now will instead download linux and install it over your Windows installation, then install the PECL extension.
This would solve so many problems.
I've also reworked the error messages displayed, I didn't feel that this sequence was as helpful as it could be: $ pear install XML_Serializer No releases of XML_Serializer found within preferred state "stable", latest release is version 0.15.0, state "beta" So, now it says: $ pear install XML_Serializer Your head asplode With these changes, I think we're ready to move to stable with PEAR 1.4.0. Or we could just kick Tobias's ass.
That's always a valid option. -ryan -- http://theryanking.com/
