Hi Matt, Thanks for the advice, but I'm working on a library that I hope will become part of the PEAR collection, so backwards compatibility is important to me. Also, on a different point. I haven't had time to investigate this myself, but how compatible is PHP5 with PHP4 classes? Will PHP4 classes scale to PHP5 without changing code? Matt Kynaston wrote:

I'm a lurker, so feel free to ignore the following... If you're getting XML from a server you have no control over, go with PHP5 and its built-in DOM support. It'll save you endless headaches. Really. I'm not casting no nasturtiums on XML_Tree and co. They're ok at what they do. In the past I've found them useful for parsing XML that's under my control. But you'll be writing code that can't be (easily) migrated to a standards-compliant parser like PHP5. And losing hair every time the foreign server throws something at you they don't handle well. PHP has been making a big fuss of version 5's built-in XML support for what, over a year? It sounds like now is the time for you and your users to upgrade. Matt
