So, I thought I could get XML_RPC2 which, according to Greg is heavily misdesigned in the XML_RPC_Value subtree, and put it through a profiler. The benchmark was done using the already existing unit test, which makes an echo request against a local (python) xml-rpc server.
You would gain a better picture of the difference by comparing it to a reworking of XML_RPC2 that does not have all the classes and files. Sure the connection and other issues are going to take more time, but the processing of files included on the server has been an issue at pear.php.net, and is not as minor as it might seem from a synthetic benchmark of a package in isolation.
