Shouldn't it go to en/packages?
I went by the contents of en/core/STATUS, but now that I look, I also see Log mentioned in en/packages/STATUS. Go ahead and move it if you decide it should be in packages/. I'm leaving on a business trip in a couple of hours and will be out of touch for about a week.
it is a *very* bad idea to call a file or directory 'core' on unix boxes (where should they dump core to if core already exists?)
