Your points here and in your subsequent messages are pretty much right on.
I notcied you didn't mention PostgreSQL. As you probably know, while you
can't define a column auto-increment, one can define a sequence then
define the column to use the next value in the sequence.

I think there are some DBMS' will need to be set to n-1 in order to
actually spit out n when requested.
