Normally in a ./cache directory off the web tree so it's on a per virtual
host basis.
We make heavy use of caching based on the query string and internal
variables as well. Because we use Oracle a lot and we run into problems with
the number of open sessions to Oracle when combined with Apache (long story)
caching helps out heaps.
We served 90,000 requests in 3 hours for our 2000 national elections which
was all cached PHP scripts and it all went with flying colours. Very cool.
As an experiment I tried caching to a ram disk but it didn't seem to make
much difference.
Cheers,
Graeme
