First, I'd like to thank everyone for the feedback. I should have elaborated further regarding
my long-term vision for such a package.
As others have already mentioned, my intention is to create a plugable architecture (via the factory
pattern) with a basic interface that all implementations must adhere to. I never seriously
considered an implementation for the aspell extension, because it's deprecated (although a
fallback command line implementation is certainly an option).
As of this writing, the only concrete implementation I have is for the pspell extension. However,
the sky is the limit here. One could have implementations for PECL enchant (as has already been
mentioned), a Web service (Google, for example) or even a PHP-only implementation (although such an
implementation would not stack up performance-wise I think). As I said, the sky is the limit here.
The required interface would be very, very basic, perhaps two (2) methods,
Text_SpellChecker::check() and Text_SpellChecker::suggest(). Implementations which have underlying
technologies that allow for additional functionality (such as custom word lists, replacement pairs,
etc) would be reflected in that particular implementation's API.
I had also tossed around the idea of incorporating a simple caching system to minimize calls to each
implementation's supporting technology (for the life of a particular object instance).
Again, all additional questions and feedback are much appreciated.
Regards,
Bryan
