Hi all,
As I note in http://greg.chiaraquartet.net/archives/74-PEAR-now-fits-in-a-bottle-meet-go-pear.phar.html
I've finally gotten off my butt and crafted a new go-pear that fits inside a single file. It is quite literally brand spanking new and probably has all of the problems associated with that state of newness. First, I need testing on linux/mac, and other windows testers to break it. Second, it installs PEAR 1.4.0a13, which is based on the unreleased current CVS and a few things that I have not yet committed to CVS.
For those wishing to examine the code, I will have time to upload things that are not yet committed quite shortly.
Basically, I took the new-go-pear.php from pearweb, and removed all of the Web frontend and downloading stuff. The web frontend will go back in, but the downloading is unnecessary since everything is self-contained. In addition, I removed the bootstrap code, as a working, self-contained PEAR version 1.4.0a13 itself is included in go-pear.phar, and is used for installation. No internet access is needed, and in my tests offline, none was unwittingly attempted.
My hope is that this will provide a very snazzy way for new users to install PEAR with PHP 4.3.0+, as an alternative to the well-worn and proven go-pear.php. A modified version of this will also be able to replace the CVS PEAR used for unix-based PEAR distribution with PHP. This will make syncing with CVS MUCH easier, as we can simply add or remove an install-pear.phar. However, that hasn't been done yet, so I get ahead of myself, as usual :).
Enjoy,
Greg
