Talking about a PEAR2 now is pure speculation. We do not even have 1.4 stable.
We still have many things we have liked to change in pear. But if they
will be in a version 2 of pear or not is not yet discussed and will
not be for quiet a long time.
About your main problem Joe, if you switch to a major version of a
package (which should have significantly big changes), the name of the
base class could be only part of the problem, very little part...
