They mess up "multilined lines", i.e.:
printf("Foo %s bar %s",
$baz,
$fum);
...unless people are careful not to. And people are generally not
careful. :-)

The latter is simply one line longer. Within reason, code is more readable
when you see more of it at once, so less lines of code is better.
