Isnt that program open source?
Why can't you read throu it and check how it access the cd?
From the sound of it, I think it would make a neat PECL extension
rather then PEAR package...

Afaik PEAR doesn't accept GPL license.

Distributing binary files with PEAR packages sounds awful and I'd
rather not allow it.
