the bufferedOutput is pretty small and just does ob_start/ob_.... etc. and can be used to get the output of the template. so it can be cached by the application: A typical example would be showing the list of categories on PEAR's web site. In returns the html string , does it do more than that ? I wouldnt think so then the app can cache that.
However what is the compiler caching you talking about ?
compiler caching is effectively the process of turning the template into a PHP script (which is what flexy and smarty both do).
Thats what i assumed.
