Dependancies on external packages

Whats the policy/convention on dependancies on non-pecl php extensions? Is it okay? is there some special way of listing said dependancy.
Specifically its for integrating Stoyan's SAP container into Auth and its dependancy on a specific php extension. So it would be listed as optional dependancy to Auth.
