I imagine that if implemented in PHP4 it wouldn't perform as well because of the way PHP4 handles objects and memory by copying the entire object by value. I wonder though if using the reference operator & in php4 for operations on list nodes would help... of course that would mean I'd have to dereference any previously used variable references before reusing them later... which could get messy.
