Christian,
Setting up a PEAR-wide unit test suite is a great initiative. This must mean quite a bit of work for
some of you guys which I do appreciate.
I have a few comments which you may use as you wish :-)
#1. Running the test every 12 hours for all packages is probably overkill. Only, those packages that
have changed (new release) should be tested, including those packages that have not changed but have
dependencies that have changed.
#2. A PHP package is supposed to run on any platform. I released a package recently that runs fine
on XP but seems to have issues on linux/64 bits OS. I have no means to test on such system (thx to
those how are helping me on this one btw). Some folks have released recently (interesting) packages
that crashed on XP (thx to them for being very responsive to fix them btw). It would be nice to test
packages automatically on several platforms, and definitely on XP. I appreciate that for packages
that do not have a proper directory structure, symlinks is the only work-around for *nix only. I
used symlink equivalent for windows some time ago, did you try any such thing?
#3 The test seems to always run with the --report option which is very nice for code coverage
testing. This is an issue for one of my packages which requires data files that actually are very
large PHP arrays. PHPUnit crashes with the following error:
"Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 35 bytes) in
..pear\PHPUnit\Util\Report\Coverage\Node\File.
php on line 377". This is due to the following statement: $tokens =
token_get_all(file_get_contents($file)); I could increase the memory in php.ini of course. I
verified that the biggest file "only" use 150Mb once tokenized (there seems to be a ratio
of 120X between the the memory requirements and the size of the file). But it takes ages and ages to
generate the report. I believe this would tax the QA test environment unacceptably. The work around
is to run the code coverage test with a subset of the data. So I have a switch in AllTest.php for
that. I release the package with the switch on. But it still have to run the test manually with the
switch off for an extensive regression test before a new release. It would be nice to optionally run
the test once with the switch on, once without, from the PEAR-wide test. I do realize that this is
most likely a low priority request though :-).
Regards,
MC

We are currently setting up a full QA system for PEAR, and we already have the beginnings of a
PEAR-wide unit test suite that is updated every 12 hours [1,2].
You can make your package compatible to this test suite, too - just follow the instructions in [3].
Then you'll get automated test results every day for your packages.
