Just speaking to the feasibility of SQL-to-XML, I'm thinking that Oracle in 9i added the ability to create XML tables and still use SQL to get data from them... so I think this avenue has been tackled before.
I did a little reading up on it and I think that Oracle is just xml-enabled as opposed to being native xml [1]. All this means is they take an xml document, convert it to their own XMLType format (which is just a database table), and then they run SQL queries on that table. Once the query is executed, the data is returned in XML format. This avenue makes sense for them because they need to be super fast and it would take too long to read in the XML documents. But I'm not sure that they're actually converting the SQL statements into XQuery statements. Michael [1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XML_database
