I just rolled version 1.1.1 of Text_Password, which I'm hoping will be
the last release of this package. Fear not, I have no intentions of
giving up its development. What I'm instead aiming for is creating a
new package which will inherit the functionality of Text_Password and
will on top of that provide a bit more.
In the past it has become obvious to me that I have been using
Text_Password for much more than just creating passwords. I basically
used it everywhere where I needed to produce "nice looking" random
string. That's why I think it is time for a new package Text_Random
with the following features:
* Generating of random strings using predefined or custom-built
generators. Assuming that Text_Random inherits the features of
Text_Password, there would at least be a generator for creating
ordinary passwords and one for creating pronounceable ones.
* "Pretty-printing" of generated random strings. The default would be
to just return the generated string. Additionally I can think of
string writers that split up a random string into same-sized blocks to
make reading or spelling them easier. In this case, a random string
"ABCDEFGHIJKL" would e.g. become "ABCD-EFGH-IJKL" or something like
that.
* Hooks for making sure that generated strings are really unique.
Often you might want to query a memcached instance or a database with
the generated string to see if it isn't used in an existing record
already. This could be realized by utilizing some sort of hooking
infrastructure.
I'm sure that are a gazillion more things that should go into
Text_Random, which is why I invite all of you to share your ideas
before I start thinking about the architecture of this thing.
