Hi there
So, it looks like the PEAR::Installer will make some progress soon. Great,
i'm very glad to see that and i think, this is one important missing piece
in the whole puzzle :)
One problem I see with the pear-installer at the moment is, that one needs
a cgi-version of php. So i think a webbrowser interface to the
pear-installer would be a Good Thing.
I know, that with a webbrowser interface (which runs a installer.php
script on the "own" webserver) it's not possibly to write directly to the
$PEARDIR directory, since this dir has seldom the same rights as the user
the webserver is running. but if we just install the downloaded
PEAR-Packages in a directory, where the server can write to (per default
maybe the dir, the script was started), one can either use the Packages
directly from this dir with the correct include_path set or one can move
these scripts later on the command line to the $PEARDIR. I think, this
would be a great tool, since then you don't have to install a command line
php only to get pear-packages. The only thing a user has to do is to write
a php-file in his dir with maybe the following commands:
<?php
include("PEAR/WebInstaller");
$installer = new PEAR_WebInstaller;
$installer->start("dir/where/we/have/write/access/");
?>
then when the script is started, it will get a xml-file from the
pear-server with all the packages and a short description, show this to
the user. He can then select which Packages he wants and after that, they
get installed in the dir stated above.
Just my two cents and i'm willing to help with all that...
