Right now one cannot compile PECL extension directly into PHP using the
PEAR installer: It should be possible to retrieve the source code via
"pear download" or "pear install", but you still need to build it
yourself.
Currently our plans are to roll a stable version of the installer for
PHP code with 4.3.0 (a stable PEAR version is one of the release
criteria of 4.3) and to hopefully have a beta version of a PECL
installer until then.
