The cursor isn't automatically reset when you reach the last row. Try
this code instead:
while ($sample = $result->fetchRow(DB_FETCHMODE_ASSCO)) {
....
}
$i = 0;
while ($sample = $result->fetchRow(DB_FETCHMODE_ASSOC, $i++)) {
}
