dear all
a while ago there was a thread discussing the installation directory
c:\php4, which is afaik created by default while installing pear.
since some people use to have their php somewhere else, i was looking
for a fix to get rid of that default setting and was looking for a
solution, where one can adapt it by setting e.g. an environment
variable. it has been pointed out on
http://bugs.php.net/17516
i discussed this also with mfischer@php.net and i modified the source
code in main/config.w32.h.in and main/main.c to fit for that need.
it would be nice if someone could have a go on the binaries i compiled;
they are available for a while here:
http://www.circle.ch/debug/bugs_php_net_17516_fix/
so, one can now set PEAR_INSTALL_DIR to e.g. c:\i-like-to-have-pear-here\
and i will be interpreted by php at runtime. i could not yet test, if it
affects the pear installation at all.
any thoughts?

changed code in main/config.w32.h.in:
#define PEAR_INSTALLDIR (getenv("PEAR_INSTALL_DIR")) ?
getenv("PEAR_INSTALL_DIR") : "c:\\php4\\pear"
changed code in main/main.c:
REGISTER_MAIN_STRINGL_CONSTANT("PEAR_INSTALL_DIR", PEAR_INSTALLDIR,
strlen(PEAR_INSTALLDIR), CONST_PERSISTENT | CONST_CS);
