Mirrors may be needed some day, and this is in the planning for the next round of PEAR core work. Currently, there is no way to mirror things.
you can, however, grab pearweb from CVS, enter every package by hand, get every single current release of every package through pear download-all, upload every single one of them through the pearweb upload release interface, and then you'll have a working mirror, people need only change their master_server variable.
However, that work would take you approximately 3-20 hours of solid work to complete, depending on the speed of your internet connection, so you may want to wait until mirroring is supported natively :)

So what should be the advantage? If you feel mirrors are actually not needed, the only possible reason may be redundancy. However, I've never seen pear.php.net down. What about the average load of the current server? Regards, Norbert
