DB Error: extension not found

I am new at PEAR and Linux in general. I would like to use PHP & PEAR to
connect to a remote MS SQL server 7.0 database. I get this error: "DB Error:
extension not found" when changing the $db_engine = 'mssql'
I also have a question regarding hostname, should that be the IP Address or
server name of the sql server database?
Do I need to configure php to use mssql? and how do I do that? I am using
redhat 9.0 with php 4.2.2
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
