Ok...it all makes more sense to me now, thanks to all
of you who have contributed!
What I will end up doing is a prepare and then execute with the
values of the fields included as bind parameters. I wasn't thinking
about
how the parser needed to parse the query string to decide where to
fill placeholders with the bind parameters. So, with that in mind
I should be good to go.
Thanks again for the help!
Matt

Hi:
As someone else mentioned, ?, & and ! are placeholder characters.
I just realized I forgot to document the following new functionality:
Use backslashes to escape placeholder characters if you don't want
them to be interpreted as placeholders:
UPDATE foo SET col=? WHERE col='over \& under'
Enjoy,
