Don't use alpha packages in critical applications. The API can be broken at
will, and there are no guarantees that there are not critical bugs. Beta
versions are more stable, but still may have upgrade issues.
However, I use alpha packages in some of my non-critical applications,
because using code that is open to public scrutiny is better than developing
my own solution and not knowing how secure it is. It depends on how
necessary the functionality is for your application and how much time you
have. And don't forget about application lifetime. If you are developing
something that will be used for a few months and then go offline (e.g., a
project-specific site), I'd be less worried than if I'm creating something
that will be around for a long time.
