Quickform hierselect and key/value pairs

Is there any way to set what the "value=" field will be for each item when creating a hierselect? I've tried passing an array of key, value to setMainOptions() but this doesn't seem to work. The default numbering doesn't help much in my application as there's no way to look up a component from its position in a <select..> field. Thanks, David
