why is HTML_TreeMenu always expanded?

Hello,
I started making a navigation bar with HTML_TreeMenu class and want to
map a piece of my filesystem. Everything is working except the
expand/collapse - option.
When I visit the navigation page the first time the complete tree is
expanded although I set the expanded option to false in the options
array (also tried with false).
What/where can I set an option, so that the tree is always collapsed and
only nodes with an explicit click are expanded?
