Pear DB fails to return Records

I have installed a new version of PHP (4.3.7) and the latest PEAR:DB (1.6.4) and find my database (mssql using freetds-0.62.3) code no longer returns records and does not report an error. Anyone have an idea of what is wrong? This is running on an IBM Z-series with suse linux (2.4.19-3suse-SMP #1 SMP Wed Nov 6 22:20:51 UTC 2002 s390x ).
Any ideas on what might be wrong?

Other notes:
Freetds returns records.
The new system appears to be making connections. It returns appropriate error messages when I try and execute SQL in which I have placed an error.
