Upgrade problems with Pear

I'm installing Horde here on a YellowDogLinux 3.0 box. When I ran the test page it stated that I have PEAR but it is not a recent version.
Mind you I never even heard of Pear before today. I followed an online guide and issued the "pear upgrade PEAR" command.
It said it require 3 other packages which I had to install. I did "pear install xxxxx" for each of the three packages.
When I went back to issue the "pear upgrade PEAR" command - all I get the command/syntax list. If I try any of the other commands I get the same thing.
The short of it is I can't the pear prompt to do anything now besides give me the command/syntax list.
Any thoughts?
