This rather unhelpful error message is the result of a pclose() returning
a nonzero value in method PEAR_Builder::_runCommand() on line 370 on
PEAR/Builder.php. In my case, running on Suse 9.0 on intel P4, the return
value from the phpize popen call is -1 even though the pipe is clearly
opened and the comman executed without an error. When I hard code the
return value of this method to true I can build PECL PEAR packages all day
long using "pear install". There is a comment on www.php.net about the
return value of pclose() having changed. That's probably worth
investigating: http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.pclose.php
