FormBuilder selectAddEmpty for dates?

I vaguely remember someone finding a way to get FormBuilder date fields to have a "--" as
a default. I need this: almost all of the dates in my application are optional and putting
today's date in by default is The Wrong Thing in this case.
Something like $fb_selectAddEmpty, IIRC.
I don't remember if it was a patch or a subclass or a workaround. In any case, I couldn't
find it with Google.
