using PEAR's error handling

Does anyone know of some good online tutorials about using PEAR's error handling methods?
I would like to know how to trigger them, test for them, call them and use the whole general built in error handling capabilities that PEAR already uses instead of rolling my own.
For instance, if I was making a small app that didn't need any PEAR packages but still needed error handling, could I just include the common file and if so, how would one go about calling the proper methods?
