Justin I think you has anticipated the fix early. Now even on an update where a date field is not required to be updated with a settter its going in as null or as an empty string, i'm gonna take the fix bak me thinks.

If you use a set method any type should be valid. I would suggest moving the if !isset, is_object, and is_array calls below the use of the set methods.
